You don’t just show up and leave. Instead, you show up, make an impression, then leave.
Casting calls are very important to models. For beginners, it can jump-start their careers into something big. Just by thinking of it that way, it’s already understood that you have to take casting calls seriously. Below, I’ve listed a few reminders before going to a casting call. They can work wonders if done the right way.
Clothing & Shoes
It’s given that you should choose a dress that is very slimming and flattering to your figure. If possible, the shorter the dress the better it is because it can showcase how long your legs are. Don’t be afraid to show a little skin! Make sure to choose a dress that has a pop of color and shows your personality as well. Take into consideration that colors can either make or break your first impression, especially for new models. Avoid neon or any color that is too straining to the eye but still has that ‘oomph’. It’s also best to wear high heels– the highest that you feel comfortable in is the best option. It’s also best to keep pieces of jewelry or accessories to minimal to none if possible.
Makeup & Other Details
Your client wants to see the real you. They’re not interested in how talented you are in doing your full face of makeup or how creative you are in playing with your eyeshadow palettes. Avoid wearing foundation as your base, especially full coverage ones. If you’re feeling under the weather and you need to add a little life to your face, stick to BB creams, CC creams, or tinted moisturizers. Remember to keep your makeup as minimal as possible. With this in mind, you shouldn’t wear any false eyelashes and don’t do a smokey eye. However, feel free to enhance your features. You can put mascara or do a plain cat eye. For a healthier looking skin, you can put moisturizer or a little bit of bronzer and highlight. But again, keep it simple and don’t go overboard. For your lips, it’s highly suggested that you don’t opt for something that’s too shiny. Matte and nude tone colors are the best options, or a lip balm that’s slightly tinted will also do the trick. For your nails, you might think it’s not a big deal, but it would be better if you stay away from bright colored nails, especially chipped nail polish. You can go for clear nail polish, nude, or a simple french tip.
Be Prepared
Just be yourself and relax. Don’t be afraid to talk and show your great personality. Clients will want to get to know you especially if you’re new. You’ll never know, but someone might take an interest in you and refer you to other clients. Also, you have to learn how to Google addresses beforehand. You don’t want to show up late just because you’re trying to blame the agency because they failed to give you the client’s address. It’s also your job to follow up with details that were not provided to you.
It’s also good to keep a spare of underwear in your bag, just in-case it was lost in translation that you are going to a casting call for an underwear or swimwear brand. Take note that the best color for your underwear should be nude/skin-tone.
Be Early
Always be early rather than late. If by any chance that you are running late because of whatever reason, at least send a text or call the agency or to the client that you’re going to be late. Don’t leave them hanging and waiting. However, you need to realize that this could reflect not only on you but also to the agency that got you into the casting call. If you can’t show up early for the casting call, they will assume that you can’t show up for the job either.
Keep It Simple
If you’re struggling with other details that were not mentioned here, always remember to keep it simple. Remind yourself that in casting calls, the clients want to see you. Whether it’s in accessories, hair, makeup, clothing, and everything else– it has to showcase your personal brand as a model.
Just a tip: Before leaving the house, look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself if this is the simplest, yet the best version of yourself. If you think it is, then all you need is a little luck and you’ll be acing that casting call.
