After you have chosen your agency, you have to decide what type of modeling career you’re best suited for. If you are tall and slender, you might want to consider runway modeling or you might want to suggest this to your agency since they will be the ones to decide what will work best for you.
For runway models, height is a priority. This isn’t to discriminate those who are vertically challenged, but it’s because a lot of designers prefer taller models because they seem to look better in terms of how the clothes hang. It gives an illusion of a better and cleaner line.
Runway Model Requirements
Your height should be about 5.7 feet or over if you’re a female and men need to be around 6 foot. Another requirement is that your weight needs to be constant because you will be required to be of a certain size. Contrary to what most believe in, you do not have to be skinny. You need to have a good and healthy figure.
A lot of models have fallen to this trap of becoming too skinny and lead to others becoming anorexic. New models are now put into strict exercise and eating routines in order to maintain a healthy weight instead of starving themselves.
What is expected of you?
Compared to other models that are behind the cameras, as a runway model you are in public more often. You need to put across a sense of health and beauty. Not only that, but you also have to be regal and sexy. While the main spotlight should be on the clothes, the way you project yourself will also be noticed.
When you’re walking the runway, you also have to get used to quick changes behind the curtains. Not just your outfits, but also hair and makeup changes. Being able to walk in monstrous heels most of the time and not fall is also a requirement. To be honest, we’ve seen so many models fall over the catwalk because of it and trust me, it’s not the best thing that could happen but they just learn to live with it.
Getting used to being in the limelight and walking in front of an audience with dozens of cameras around you is also a must. It can be nerve-wracking at first, but once you get used to it, it becomes easier.
Traveling Overseas
Most runway modeling jobs may require you to fly overseas on various occasions for fashion shows. It can be difficult and tough at some point but this will be a big stepping stone in your career because it will give you the exposure that you need to make it into the international modeling scene.
However, not all modeling agencies will make sure that your flights and accommodation are well taken cared of. So, make sure that you ask beforehand if this happens. If you are under 18 years of age, don’t be shy to ask if you can take a guardian with you.
The Reality
Just like any other modeling gig, runway modeling comes with advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to you to make it work, especially when you’re suited for the job.
You will be required to attend rehearsals and fittings and it can involve long hours. It’s not uncommon for these things to run as long as 12 hours and you might be required to change in places that are not so private–possible in front of stylists, makeup artists, and hairdressers.
Whatever path that you choose as a model, my advice is: Love what you do.
