In the fashion industry, like it or not, not just your image, but your behavior will also often be under microscopic observation. And if you want to succeed, professional behavior and a good attitude are absolute essentials. You should try to be reliable, punctual, adaptable, considerate, pleasant and loyal. First impressions count; when you walk into a room you should smile and greet people pleasantly and show enthusiasm.
Of course, it is all very well being on your best behavior, but unfortunately there may be times when you encounter colleagues who are not on theirs and who may try and take advantage. You must be prepared for some of the situations you might face so you can protect yourself from exploitation, harassment and bad attitudes.
You may find yourself faced with a job which asks you to pose in a way you feel uncomfortable. This may be nudity, lingerie or swimwear shoots or work which asks you to compromise your beliefs, such as wearing fur or holding a cigarette.
You can try to avoid awkward and embarrassing situations by making your mind up about what work you feel comfortable with in advance.
Make sure you explain to your agency exactly what is acceptable to you, do not be vague. It is your agency’s duty to inform the client prior to booking confirmation. Do not let yourself be pressured or tricked into doing something during the job you are not happy about.
The best defence against offensive behavior is to be well informed. If you do find yourself facing inappropriate advances or are suffering harassment, report your concerns to the police. Keeping quiet is definitely not the solution.
If you are experiencing offensive behavior, try to keep calm and not show emotion. Simply express your concerns in the most non-confrontational manner possible to the perpetrator.
Quietly but firmly state acceptable behavior boundaries. Should they continue, just leave. Standing up to harassment will not prevent you from getting future jobs. You can help yourself by making sure you always carry your mobile phone. Keep a note of exactly what was said and what happened which will aid the police if need be. Confide in your booker or someone at your agency who you trust and report every disquieting incident and detail to them. It is vital your Agency knows.
