Is it just me or has this been totally the season of selfies? Well come to think of it, sometimes a selfie is kind of necessary. And who better to make those shots perfect than the genetic lottery winners, the beautiful models. I am not biased here or anything but truth be told, most models:
A) are extremely photogenic, and
B) know a thing or two about lighting and angles.

Having worked in the industry for quite sometime now, I too have picked up some valuable tips from the fashion experts, hairstylists and amazing photographers and regular Instagrammers. And boy, have I learned some great stuff. Your bad days of mortifying photos are about to be over because I, am about to spill the top tips for looking your very best in a selfie.
Let your features shine with great lighting and right angles
Good lighting calls for great photographs. If you want your selfie to shine, then just step outside! Early morning or late afternoon is the ideal time for lighting. And refrain from reversing the camera on your phone so that you can see yourself. It lowers the quality of your photo. For the right angle, experiment in front of the mirror to determine which angles make your face look extra stunning. Majority of people look best when their face is tilted to the camera at a slight angle, as opposed to straight on. If emotional engagement is what you’re seeking, then look directly to the camera lens.
Jourdan Dunn
“It’s all about the right angle and finding your light. The right angle is different for everybody.”
Big hair
Who’d have imagined that hair could be so crucial for the perfect photo? Your hair needs more volume both around the sides and on top, as photos tend to shrink it. Hair that looks great in real life needs a little adjustment for the camera because images tend to look flat. Up dos work great for blonds, as it highlights the texture in your mane. If you’re a brunette on the other hand, focus on achieving sleek, shiny strands.
Meghan Collison
“Find a place with good lighting. Usually daylight is more flattering than harsh overhead lights. And make a silly face!”
Must-download apps + use a good photo filter
Knowing your good side is crucial for mastering the art of snapping an awesome selfie. One way to capture your best moment is to download the Camera Plus app first. This handy apps allow you to clarify and brighten your skin, and make that red pout shine even brighter. And if you tend look like you haven’t slept in days or are about to keel over and die, the top models highly recommend selecting an extreme filter, such as Willow or Inkwell, in Instagram to conceal those lines and dark circles. The app called Aviary lets you edit out blemishes. Hello, beautiful!
Karen Elson:
“The thing I hate about selfies–and I’m very guilty of it–is you’re pretending you haven’t done it five times over and that they’re really candid. Selfies are always hilarious. Everyone is editing their selfies. I do!”
Take off your phone cover
This has a major impact on the quality of your photo, in a positive way of course.
You’ll be amazed at the difference in the picture quality and clarity with and without a cover. I am surprised every time when I take off my cover and just shoot with the phone itself. The difference is night and day!
Crystal Renn
”Know your angles. And experiment. Take 20 and one will be good. You can delete later. I am a fan of the Lo-Fi or Ansel filters on Camera Plus. I like high contrast graphic images. I like to play with a lot of light.”
And lastly, have fun! Take your time, and explore all the possibilities within the photo and be as creative as you can get. Because selfies are supposed to be fun!
