Nobody likes having acne, but for models it can make the difference between landing that big campaign or not. Acne has no room on my skin as zits are supremely annoying, especially because my job as a model demands a flawless complexion. I remember, as a teen, I missed hanging out with my ‘buddies’ thanks to my insecurity about my acne.
A few days ago, while updating my daily journal, an old note popped out. “Oh gosh,” It was an old note about a dermatologist appointment, from when I was 15. That’s when a flashback of my painful acne journey swept my mind.
Anyway, it’s not that I get cold feet when I think about a doctor’s date, but I don’t need it anymore. Why? Thanks to the many tips from the makeup artists I work with, I now have a perfect skin. So, that’s why today, I share my story with those suffering from stubborn acne.
The nightmare of acne and lack of modeling contracts from when I was 15 years old is still fresh on my mind. Well, there is more stuff coming in my next part, so stay with me don’t move an inch. I would be adamant, stating there’s no such thing as “perfect” skin. Although having a “good skin” is excellent for the modeling industry, it all depends on how well you play your cards.
My Journey to Modeling Acne-Free
Back to my acne tale, but first, my advice to aspiring models fighting acne. I would suggest you take care of your skin first. I recall fighting the mother of all wars with my acne as I got my foot in modeling. After testing many skincare products, was I back to square one or getting worse.
Keeping my fingers away from my face was the tough part. The more I picked, the more the pores clogged. Oh, I suffered! However, after a long struggle, I tried some of the tips that makeup artists shared with me. You know what happened next. It worked!
I remember my breakthrough was a bright sunny morning during a photo-shoot casting. The minute I stepped into the room, there went the first comment from one nosy interviewer. “Wow! What’s the secret behind your flawless skin?” Since the query caught me off guard, I smiled and replied with an appreciation.
Here are a few points on how to handle first hand with acne. Let’s jump in.
How to Face your Spots Head-on
Allow me to share a few ideas about kicking your acne. I’m shocked these are home remedies I blindly ignored, thinking that simple tips can never be perfect!
Taylor Hill, a Victoria’s Secret Angel, talked to Allure Fragrance about her acne during a show in New York. “I have up and downs, I struggle with acne, and I’ve struggled for a long time,” she said.
Acne occurs to pretty much anyone, at some point, celebrities and model angels included – thought you should know! Meghan Markle, Karlie Kloss, and Claudia Schiffer were once victims. Whether you have acne, wash your face twice a day. Well, it isn’t magic but aids in the removal of dead skin cells, impurities, and extra oil pile up.
#Tip
Swear off dairy! Dairy is inflammatory and creates mucus in your body. My skin improved dramatically when I lowered my dairy intake. Meats and sugars are also good to reduce, if you can, since they’re also very inflammatory.
My Skin-Clearing Secret
I want to sneak in my little but main secret here. Here’s the secret, oil, oil, oil… and apple cider vinegar! Let nature be your best friend. Good oils mix with the bad oils and neutralize them, killing bad bacteria.
Many oils will work, but I like Cameline oil (because it’s super high in Omega 3 and low in 6 & 9, making it very anti-inflammatory), but you can even use Olive Oil.
Make sure to buy organic oil packaged in dark-colored glass (sunlight ruins the oil and plastic mixes with oil to make the oil toxic). Mix a little lavender essential oil in (or any other antibacterial essential oil). At night, wipe your face with Apple Cider Vinegar (you can add essential oils to make it smell better) to cleanse and balance the bacteria and PH of your skin.
Follow by putting this oil on a cotton pad and wiping your face instead of washing it. I know, it feels like you should wash it, but don’t! I promise, after a few weeks your skin will be completely healed and healthy.
Skincare must accompany a plant-based diet if you want healthy skin. Try cutting out on caffeine and excess sugars. Replace those with nothing but plain filtered water or herbal tea – eight glasses a day.
I bet you must ask why there’s no mention of my use of acne products. Using acne products as a shortcut was not my cup of tea. It just made my skin thinner, dry, and didn’t get rid of my zits. So I went natural and straightforward – why not you? It works!
Bonus Tip
Having a great, perfect skin will put you far ahead of the game, ad your chances of scoring a modeling gig will increase! “Failure is never an option” – Naomi Campbell, Instagram.
Take Away
Now, this is important. Don’t rely on Photoshop as the primary method to make you appear flawless. No model agency will look twice should your skin not be up to par. I once saw this screaming stamp on my comp card – “acne!” Unfortunately, your modeling dream is past tense for severe acne with no sign of clearing up soon.
That’s not all; let me know how the acne-free regimen worked for you!
