We might all be familiar with the 3-D printing technology. Some companies are already using it to make every day items or if you feel like making something of your own, then you can even purchase a personal printer. And this is exactly what Danit Peleg did for her final project in school.
In the photo above, you will see that these clothes aren’t really different from any other clothing that you’ve seen before. But if you take a closer look in this video, you will see it’s really different. And bouncy.
What inspired Danit Peleg?
I was always interested in the connection [between] fashion and technology, so my work was about laser cutting and 3-D printing. I knew from the beginning that my final project would also be [about] technology.
But this took a lot of work from her because this technology was not a part of her curriculum in school. And she needed to find a lab in Tel Aviv, Israel in order to know more about her intended experimental collection. So this is like a rogue mission of hers, which I can see paid off.
How did Danit Peleg pull it off?
It wasn’t a walk in the park, I’m telling you. Her first challenge was finding a softer material that can be worn. Her second challenge was putting all the printed pieces together, by using a glue. And of course, the most challenging of them all, is actually printing it.
It took her nine months, more than 2,000 hours of printing just 5 dresses and these printers ran 24/7 just so she can meet her’s school’s deadline.
The clothes aren’t actually bad! They’re totally wearable and breathable. I wouldn’t mind having one, though Danit Peleg confirms that they’re not going to be cheap. We’ve already seen collections in the past that incorporated 3-D printed clothes, just not the full collection. So this is a first for the fashion industry. What do you think of clothes from 3-D printers?
