Models may seem beautiful on the catwalk, but behind the scenes, they are going to drastic measures to achieve their look. A number of models have admitted that staying within the range of their ideal weight is difficult, considering the way the body’s metabolic cycle fluctuates intermittently. Getting into size zero clothes can be very challenging, especially for those who may have upped their calories while not working out constantly.
Odd Dieting Approaches
Many subject themselves to crash diets and other unhealthy methods just to reach their targets on time. One model (whom we will not name) admits that she relies on one or more packs of cigarettes, laxatives, diet pills and even special injections that boost metabolism to get rid of fat quickly.
These injections consist of a hormone called HGC. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone naturally found in the placenta of pregnant women. It is generally pitched throughout the weight-loss community as an appetite suppressant and metabolism booster, and many models administer shots into the thigh while eating less than 500 calories throughout the day. Not shockingly, when compared to a placebo substance, it has been proven that HCG injections do not have any advantages: the dangerous dieting method is useless.
Some models and agents recommend hard, illegal drugs like cocaine and speed in the penultimate week before the show. These drugs are known to suppress appetite and speed up the central nervous system – and therefore metabolism – to prevent weight gain and encourage fat loss in the shortest span of time possible. Supermodels such as Kate Moss have admitted to taking different types of drugs to keep her ultra-skinny frame in top shape.
Some models have said that they practice hypnosis, and many have admitted that consuming cotton balls to feel full is common practice. The cotton balls are meant to absorb fat and water and are usually ingested in the last few days before a big shoot or runway show.
“Cleansing” Diets
Cleansing diets have become quite popular as models continue to search for the ideal approach that will get rid of bloating and extra pounds before the big event. Like the other tactics mentioned, the models who find themselves resorting to this dieting method may suffer from a variety of health and psychiatric conditions: loss of bone density, muscle deterioration, depression, irritability and dry skin. Scarily enough, despite the warnings against it, even the general, non-model public has fallen prey to juice and water cleanses. Going through these extreme diets can be very detrimental in the long term – and eventually deadly. There have been several instances in which models have passed out behind curtains. Several have even died as a result of malnutrition, most notably Ana Carolina Reston, who was just twenty-one when she passed away due to malnutrition caused by her anorexia.
When you think high-fashion models have it all, think again. There are real-life horror stories happening behind the scenes that will contrast the beautiful exterior to its dying interior.
